“I want to go home,” Mal said, turning her big, bright eyes to Lane. “I don’t care about the field anymore. Please, just take us home.”

Lane sighed. He crouched on the ground beside her, taking her chin in his hand. “I’ve been trying,” he told her. “I haven’t been looking for the field for days.”

“But you know where home is,” Eagy said. “By your reasoning, it shouldn’t be hard to find.”

Lane continued to look into Mal’s tear-filled eyes. Those tears hadn’t dried since TL had been wrapped in the tail of the phobia. Two days.

“Yes,” Lane answered eventually. “However, it seems something doesn’t want us to leave. Our way keeps getting blocked.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kettle-licking me,” Wyat swore.

A true sign to how upset Mal was in this moment was that she didn’t giggle at Wyat’s phrase. Chesh was sure that was one she’d find amusing.

“Either our business isn’t done or something – someone – is intentionally blocking our path,” Lane reiterated. “I’ve been trying to go around it for a couple days.

“I hate this place,” Mal said angrily. Angry tears trekked down her cheeks. “I hate it. I want to burn it all down. Burn the Shadelands until there’s nothing but empty margins left!”

Lane sighed. He released Mal and turned away. “If that were an option, I’d have already suggested it.”

“Then what are our options?” Wally asked.

The fae shook his head. “Keep walking.” He glanced at TL. Ris had done some serious medical magic to clear up so much of the burns. By that, he was urging them to heal over quickly. But those scars… they weren’t going to go away. His neck would be the worse because that was where the tail-on-fire had wrapped. But his face and torso would be almost equally as bad. “After our flower heals a bit longer.”

TL gave him a bemused smile. Rehm was sitting close, having not left his side since he was allowed near. Though he wouldn’t touch TL either. He was afraid of the ‘ow’s’ and didn’t want to hurt him.

It was many days later that they finally started moving again. This time with the knowledge that they were trying to get home.

But it wasn’t any easier this time than it had been all along. The nightmares didn’t let up when they were in the open. The phobias stayed just as menacing and prevalent when they were by the water. And the unnamed were plentiful when they were near the trees.

Chesh had lost track of how many days it had been since the flying phobia but one afternoon, Eagy sat up straight and pointed ahead of them. “There,” he said. “See it?”

Chesh was momentarily filled with a false sense of relief, for it wasn’t home he was pointing to but something that looked like a palace in the distance. There would be no Wonderland palaces they should be able to see from the Shadelands, namely because they’d recently torn them all down.

But this one was so big and glittered so brightly, it was hard to miss.
